Portrait of Mary Alice Evans Mary Alice Evans, OPSD Director

Mary Alice Evans is the director for the Hawaii State Office of Planning and Sustainable Development. She serves as a co-chair of the Transit-Oriented Development Council, and the State Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission, and as chair of the Greenhouse Gas Sequestration Task Force. She is a designated alternate on the Board of Agriculture and the Agricultural Development Corporation. She has been a state employee for over 40 years, starting as a student intern and serving in four departments. Mary Alice received her BA degree in Sociology from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She earned her MA degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Truthfully a geographer, Tom has been engaged with Hawai’i’s planning community for over 25 years. Presently serving as a planner in the Environmental Review Program, Tom also has natural resource planning experience with the Coastal Zone Management Program and the Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands. His planning perspective has been broadened by employment with two county planning departments, as well as working as a sole proprietor consultant and with a large local planning firm. Preferring to surf and practice yoga in his free time, Tom has also been a Neighborhood Board & Community Garden Board member, volunteered as a docent at the Waikīkī Aquarium, and built yurts, permaculture gardens, and photovoltaic systems.
